“Holy Trinity” of Affordable Self-Care

When I was in middle school, I wanted to learn how to apply makeup well. At the time, youtube was my main educational source. In today’s world, the amount of related content has probably more than quadrupled. There is such an enormous amount of content available to the public, that I come across more than 50 beauty or lifestyle advertisements on a daily basis. How do I know which one’s are worth looking into? Which items am I willing to spend money on?

After struggling with balancing finances and my own personal self-care regimen, I have found that it is helpful to consider 3 important factors:

1. Diet

Drink as much water as you need to function at a healthy level. Many vitamin waters are being advertised on instagram, but nothing really compares to the original. Plain and purified water is a necessity, but it also has other benefits. An article on skinkraft.com lists 10 benefits of drinking water. These benefits include: reduction of puffiness, prevention of premature aging, and prevention of acne.

The food that you consume on a daily basis should be enough to sustain you. With many different types of diets emerging through social media, it could be difficult to find which one is right for you. As someone who has struggled with dieting in the past, I want to send a message to those going through the same thing. The only job your diet should have is to keep you healthy and thriving.

2. Skincare

After meeting with a dermatologist for my acne, I learned that skin chemistry is extensive. The type of skin each person has is almost like a fingerprint. Finding the right skincare routine is mostly understanding what type of skin you have. For example, my skin type is combination and sensitive. In my case, it is beneficial to use very few fragrance-free products.

One tip that I feel is heavily overlooked is pillowcase hygiene. For most people, half of the day is meant for sleeping. Something used as much as pillowcases should probably be cleaned quite regularly. I personally own multiple sets of silk pillowcases that I switch out every week.

3. The “Fun” Stuff

Putting on makeup in the morning is always my favorite part of the day. I personally find it relaxing and it gives me a creative outlet. Everybody should find time in their day to do something that inspires their creativity. Some people might prefer writing in a journal or making art. A brain-mapping study conducted at the University College London even showed results that suggest viewing art can increase dopamine levels.

The “Holy Trinity” has served me well throughout my time as a full-time student. The beauty of this frame of thinking is it doesn’t force too much effort. Everything that has been said is achievable at any level a person chooses. I wish for the best to all the readers of this post in their journey through self-care.
