I think food counts as a universal language, but you can’t help living amongst a certain culture. I grew up eating mainly Vietnamese food, and I absolutely love everything about this cuisine. It may be nostalgia or even bias, but I think Vietnamese food has the ability to be very versatile. In this post, I will be breaking down the differences between 3 of the most iconic Vietnamese noodle dishes: Phở, Bún, and Hủ tiếu.
Phở
Considered to be the national dish of Vietnam, phở usually consists of thin rice noodles and your preferred protein (beef or chicken) inside a broth made of pork broth and various spices like star anise. One of the most popular renditions of Phở is Phở Dặc Biệt. In english, this roughly translates to “special phở”. For anyone who is trying phở for the first time, I would recommend this version because it usually comes with beef, tendon, and liver. It is a great way to introduce yourself to this dish. Most Vietnamese restaurants will usually serve an extra plate of herbs, bean sprouts, and jalapeños on the side to add to your soup as well.
Bún
I love Bún! This noodle dish is typically served with glass, rice, or egg noodles and is usually accompanied by seafood or beef. This type of noodle dish is the most versatile of all of the dishes because it can be prepared dry or wet. The dry version of bún is usually served with a side bowl of broth mixed with fish sauce and chili. My all time favorite noodle dish is Bún Bò Huế. This dish is usually made with thin rice noodles and is accompanied with beef, chả lụa (viet sausage), and pork knuckles. I mostly enjoy it because it always prepared with a spicy broth. If you can handle spice, I would highly recommend this dish.
Hủ tiếu
A very underrated dish, Hủ tiếu is a noodle dish that can also be made dry or wet. The staple components of this dish are the flat rice noodles, pork bones, and seafood. If you are looking for a lighter option out of the three, this is the dish for you. I personally like this dish dry and I usually order it with seafood. Flat rice noodles are also my favorite kind of noodles.
