In this blog post, I will be going into depth on one of my favorite Hindu Goddesses: Mahakali or Kali. This goddess has a reputation for having a pretty jarring visual representation. I actually chose to write about this goddess because I found her look to be intriguing.
Hindu Gods and Goddesses exist as essences of different aspects of Brahman. Brahman is the primordial energy that acts as a core for the philosophy and energy of Hinduism. Kali is actually a part of a branch of energy that exists out of Brahman. She shares aspects with Shakti, Parvati and Durga. Durga looks most similar to Kali because she also has more than two arms. This is because Durga is also a warrior. Kali is just a little more unhinged. Overly Sarcastic Productions has a great video explaining this much better than I can.
One example of Kali’s depiction in media would be the drama series: Mahakali – Anth Hi Aarambh Hai. Pooja Sharma plays the role of both Parvati and Kali. I have actually been seeing paintings and artworks of Kali since I was little. It’s just one of those things that scares you a little bit when you see it as a kid, but it also makes you curious about why Kali is wearing a necklace of demon heads. Mythic Concepts’s video explains the reason in a concise way.
Overall, I have enjoyed learning about Kali. She is a proper badass in every right and I enjoy the fact that she has the ability to fight a demon that can make clones out of his blood. I enjoy the fact that she is connected to both Parvati and Shakti. Both Goddesses represent a very maternal and warm demeanor. I think that it makes a lot of sense to connect a fierce protecter and a mother together. It genuinely warms my heart that she cares and fight for her followers. I also enjoy the depictions of her relationship with her love interest: Mahakala, or better known: Shiva. I highly recommend watching or reading anything about Kali’s origins.
