Top 3 Tips for Dyeing/Bleaching “Virgin” Hair

As someone who has dyed their hair nonstop since middle school, I have made some poor decisions at the expense of the health of my hair. Hopefully, this post will convince whoever is reading this to not make the same mistakes as myself. In a past blog post, I have mentioned that skincare is mostly about knowing your own skin. The concept is the same with hair. If you understand the type of hair you have, you will be better equipped to make the proper decisions for your hair dyeing journey. Brad Mondo actually has a great video on how to choose the right color for your skin tone.

Tip 1: Start with a balayage

Balayage is a technique for highlighting hair in a way that looks natural. This could be an alternative to bleaching your full head of hair and avoiding more damage. Balayage can also be done with brighter colors as well, so go ahead and go crazy!

Tip 2: Choose a color that will fade well

This tip will depend on the individual. For example, I have naturally dark straight black hair with a slight reddish undertone. Because of this, reddish colors will fade better on my hair even if I bleach it. If you have blonde or lighter natural hair (so jealous of that btw), any color will probably fade well no matter what. I also recommend stocking up on Olaplex or a preferred deep conditioner. Bleaching or dying hair will strip and damage your hair to the point of substantial vulnerability. Brushing out tangles will be less damaging and your hair will thank you.

Tip 3: Remember that HAIR GROWS BACK

At the end of the day, hair with continue to grow no matter what. The important thing to remember is any bad choices you make along the way will never be permanent. Coloring hair should be a fun journey. I personally love the process because it can be so relaxing. I actually plan to continue to dye my hair until my natural color turns grey, so I will hopefully have many more opportunities to potentially make another bad choice. 🙂
